What's going on with the iPhone?
New iPhone updates and security features

Dear Readers,
Do you have an iPhone? As of 2022 over 120M (120,000,000) Americans have an iPhone. With so many users here at home any updates to iPhones are a big deal. Further, any issues with the iPhone are an even bigger deal. This week we’re looking at the old and new security features that make the iPhone device a first line of defense in protecting yourself and your information from cyber crime.
Last weeks newsletter is a good starting point.
We talked briefly about the security features of Apple Pay. Read Here
Let’s take a look at the latest security features:
Stolen Device Protection:
Stored within the typical iPhone is a treasure trove of personal data including passwords, apps with access to email and banking information, and your photographs. Prior to Stolen Device Protection if a person stole your device and your password, say at a crowded event after watching you put in your password, they could take control of your device. With the phone unlocked they would change the Apple ID password. Now that person will not be able to change your passwords and alter security credentials without also using a second form of identification. This added layer of protection will help prevent one of the major security vulnerabilities of the iPhone.
Built in Password Management:
A password manager is like a secure digital locker where you can safely keep all your online passwords, so you only have to remember one main password to access them all. It makes using the internet safer and easier. To make life even easier, Apple offers a built in password manager that works seamlessly with your iPhone called iCloud Keychain. Whenever you create a new account iCloud will suggest a secure password and save it for your going forward.
Find My:
Find My is an app that lets users locate a lost iPhone using another apple device to track its location. Once you identify the device as being lost it will automatically lock itself and disable your credit cards. Further you even have the option to display approved contact information to allow a good samaritan to return your device to you. Using this feature along with Stolen Device Protection will help you maintain device security even when your iPhone is not with you.
What does it all mean?
The iPhone is amongst the better devices when it comes to user security. Apple has showed consistent understanding of the threats facing users. Even with this being said it is up to you to learn how to secure the device and activate the appropriate security features.
